Surgery

Barry Road Animal Hospital is equipped to perform most common veterinary surgical procedures. We have a dedicated surgical suite that allows better patient monitoring and a more sterile environment.

If your pet is in need of surgery we perform an initial exam, blood testing, and auscultation of the heart and lungs to determine the safety of the procedure. During the surgery, your pet is constantly monitored with a state-of-the-art machine that measures temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, oxygenation of the blood, and an EKG. They are also placed on a heating pad and given IV fluids if indicated. In addition a Registered Veterinary Technician is always present, monitoring the patient and assisting the veterinarian before, during and after the surgery during the recovery. A close watch is kept on the patient after surgery and they are kept comfortable and pain free as much as possible.

Most pets are released the same afternoon of surgery once they are stable and able to walk out the door. Most often pain medications are dispensed for home use, and complete care instructions are given the client at dismissal.

For difficult cases that require more expertise and continued care, we are very pleased to refer our clients and patients to Blue Pearl Specialty & Emergency Medicine for Pets and VCA Specialty Animal Hospital, both located here in Kansas City. In addition, we have the ability to refer patients to two outstanding veterinary teaching hospitals at the University of Missouri in Columbia and Kansas State University in Manhattan.
